Lyon is ready to get rid of its historic locker room character.
Still under threat of relegation if its financial accounts are not rectified, Olympique Lyonnais could find a little respite thanks to the winter transfer window. The club could consider a sale of one of its historic players, Maxence Caqueret.
Maxence Caqueret et Olympique Lyonnais it was a lifelong story. The midfielder joined Les Gones and made all his classes in the youth teams. In 2020, he truly joined the first team and thus launched his career at the high level. Two years later, Olympique Lyonnais renews confidence in the player and extends until June 2026.
This season, he only played 7 minutes in the last 7 days of Ligue 1. The rise of Corentin Tolissowho could even be recalled to the French team, as well as the arrival of Jordan Veretout, Nemanja Maticand the promising beginnings of Tanner Tessmann relegated Caqueret to the background. Once essential, the midfielder trained in Lyon is no longer a priority choice.
However, other European teams dreamed of securing Caqueret's services this summer. German champion last season, Bayer Leverkusen has clearly positioned itself for the player. But the team of Xabi Alonso ended up losing interest in the 24-year-old. Questioned on the question of his failed departure Caqueret gave explanations in September. “This summer, I didn't have any concrete offers. Was it disappointing? No, I'm at OL, in a top club in France. (…) In my head, I was possibly up for it because the sports director had said it openly, but the fact of not having concrete offers…” he declared.
Under contract until 2027, Caqueret has enjoyed a high salary since his extension in 2022, where he was expected to play a central role. According to The Team, Caqueret himself considers that the time has come to leave. Frustrated by his lack of playing time at an age where he should be playing a series of matches, the midfielder was already close to leaving last summer, particularly towards Bayer Leverkusen. An offer of 20 million euros was considered, but ultimately did not see the light of day. English clubs have also been monitoring his progress, but this winter his rating could be down after a more discreet period.
