Le Parisien reveals the abandoned project to expand the Parc des Princes, started in 2018 between PSG and the City of Paris.
The new Parc des Princes will never see the light of day. The project was abandoned at the end of 2021 after broken negotiations between the City of Paris and PSG, because the town hall refused to sell the venue.
But how beautiful this project was! The aim was to increase the stadium's capacity from 48,000 to around 60,000, by rearranging the stands and adding a roof extension.
This project would have required an investment of 500 million euros, with an inauguration planned for the 2028-2029 season. PSG had also considered creating a 15,000 m² area nearby for hotels, shops and sports infrastructures.
The sale of the Park changed everything
However, the discussions failed due to an unexpected request from PSG (according to the town hall): the sale of the Park. The City of Paris, after valuing the stadium at 350 million euros, rejected this proposal and offered a long-term lease at an advantageous price. “We were all satisfied to have found technical feasibility. But at the end of this 2021 meeting, PSG set a condition that had never been mentioned until then, the sale of the Park,” indicates an assistant to Anne Hidalgo, Pierre Rabadan in Le Parisien.
Before continuing “We expressed our refusal, but still asked what price the club was prepared to pay. After a few weeks, its managers came back to us, offering us €38 million. This obviously ended up sealing our position. »
Since then, PSG no longer wishes to discuss a lease, preferring to concentrate on the sale of the stadium, while the City of Paris maintains its offer.
