Before the official quarrel between PSG and the Paris town hall for the purchase of the Parc des Princes, and in particular the now non-existent relationship between Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and Anne Hidalgo, the capital club had big plans. Le Parisien reveals in today's edition that PSG had considered an ambitious project to expand the Parc des Princes, agreed with the City of Paris in 2021 but since abandoned.
This plan called for transforming the enclosure into a modern and competitive stadium with 55,000 to 60,000 seats. The stands would have been razed and then rebuilt in a more vertical manner, bringing spectators closer to the pitch. A lightweight roof would have completed this transformation to preserve the emblematic structure designed by Roger Taillibert. In addition to increasing capacity, the project aimed to double the number of VIP boxes, a major source of income for the club. With a ticket office generating 131 million euros per year, PSG intended to maximize its profits, already surpassing other European giants. Only the Auteuil stand would have been spared to maintain an authentic atmosphere for traditional supporters.
Major works above the ring road
The extension required a minimum investment of 500 million euros, to be borne by the club. The City, for its part, had to undertake major work, including covering part of the ring road to improve accessibility. This plan also included an area of 15,000 m² near the Park for hotels, shops and sports infrastructures. However, PSG made this work conditional on the purchase of the stadium, offering 38 million euros, well below the City's estimate, set at 350 million. This disagreement stopped the discussions. Today, the club seems to favor a new stadium in Île-de-France, but such a project would take at least 15 years to come to fruition, according to experts.
