The catastrophic sporting and economic situation of the Girondins which led to their fall to the fourth division has claimed a new victim. Matmut has decided not to renew its naming contract with the stadium which has borne its name since 2015.
It is becoming difficult to find positive news related to the Girondins de Bordeaux. Sportingly, the scapular club, which has descended to the fourth level of French football, is not doing too badly. Qualified in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France, Bruno Irles' men are in fourth place with eight points and a match behind leader Saint-Malo. Apart from that, we cannot say that the context of the club is very good. Recently, the vast majority of club employees were dismissed by management who continue to make painful decisions because of the receivership. A misfortune which does not happen alone since according to Sud Ouest, Matmut, the mutual insurance company which has given its name to the Girondins stadium since 2015, has decided not to renew its naming contract.
Matmut Atlantique will have to change its name
At the time of its inauguration, in May 2015, the venue was still called “New Bordeaux Stadium”. It was only in December of that same year that the company Stade Bordeaux-Atlantique (SBA) reached an agreement with Matmut. For a little less than 2 million euros per year for 10 years, which goes to SBA, the mutual insurance company could give its name to the Bordeaux stadium, which then became the Matmut Atlantique. Since then, things have changed a lot. Having reached the end of this decade of naming, the mutual organization today refuses to renew its contract in the face of the disastrous sporting situation of the Girondins.
-This non-renewal has several consequences. First, from July 2025, the Bordeaux stadium can no longer be called Matmut Atlantique. Also, it is a new blow for SBA which loses an important contract. “ The operation of Matmut is structurally loss-making. The loss of naming will further degrade the economy of a stadium which, until now, has never found its balance », adds Sud Ouest. For SBA, it will be impossible to find a new partner with a resident club that operates so low in the ranks of French football.
