Championship leaders, the Reds lost two points after a spectacular match at Newcastle (3-3). Pep Guardiola's Citizens found success against Nottingham (3-0).
The Reds slowed down at the end of a crazy scenario. This Wednesday during the 14th day of the Premier League, leader Liverpool was expected on the Newcastle pitch to confirm their crazy last week (victories against Real Madrid and Manchester City). And the Reds experienced a delay in starting, trailing at the break with a superb goal from Alexander Isak for the Magpies (35th). Returning from the locker room, Mohamed Salah found Curtis Jones in the area (50th), 1-1.
This same Salah, unstoppable, then thought of donning the costume of savior by offering himself yet another double, on two serves behind his sidekick Trent Alexander-Arnold (68th, 83rd). A few minutes earlier, Anthony Gordon (62nd) had given Newcastle the lead again. Who would, in a final burst of energy, snatch the equalizer thanks to his defender Fabian Schar (90th). Final score 3-3, the Scousers, having gone through all the emotions, nevertheless remain at the top of the Premier League but lose two points on their direct competitors.
City ends its black streak
Meanwhile, end of the black streak at Manchester City. After seven games without a win in all competitions (six defeats, one draw), the English champion (finally) found the path to victory when they hosted Nottingham Forest (3-0). Pep Guardiola's men – seen very relieved on his sidelines – mastered their subject and concretized their domination with goals signed Bernardo Silva (8th), Kevin De Bruyne (31st) and Jeremy Doku (57th). The Belgian De Bruyne, captain who had his first start since September 18 (against Inter Milan in the Champions League), largely contributed to Citizens' success by making the game more fluid.
Chelsea and her “Frenchies” on a walk
On the pitch of bottom-placed Southampton, Chelsea did the job, helped by their French. Starting in defense, Wesley Fofana being injured, Axel Disasi opened the scoring with a header for the Blues (7th) before Christopher Nkunku doubled the lead, taking advantage of a huge error from the opposing goalkeeper Lumley (17th). The Englishman Noni Madueke (34th) added to the score then the Saints found themselves down to ten following the exclusion of Jack Stephens (40th). In the second half, the inevitable Cole Palmer also scored his goal (77th). Undefeated for six games in the league, Chelsea consolidates its 2nd place in the standings.
Finally, in the evening's low-ranked match, Everton crushed Wolverhampton (4-0) at Goodison Park. The Toffees, who will host their neighbor Liverpool on Saturday (1:30 p.m.), climb to 15th place. Wolves are 19th.
