In search of a new prolific striker this summer, OM took out the checkbook to treat themselves to Elye Wahi. But the case appears to be a complicated affair. Journalist Romain Molina explains why…
In search of an offensive revival after the resplendent performances of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, OM struck hard by recruiting Elye Wahi. The young French striker, bought from Lens for an amount of around 30 million euros (bonus included), symbolizes a significant risk-taking for the Marseille club. At just 21 years old, Wahi has already shown undeniable qualities in Ligue 1, scoring 19 goals during the 2022-2023 season with Montpellier. However, this XXL transfer raises questions about its appropriateness and economic viability.
Jorge Mendes defeated Elye Wahi…
On his Youtube channel, journalist Romain Molina makes revelations about Elye Wahi. He notably mentions the fact that OM was the only club to really want him this summer, at the end of a mixed season in Lens. For what ? Because behind the scenes, a man in the shadows settles his scores: “Basically, PSG must do Elye Wahi because relations with Montpellier are good. And because Wahi's new agent is very close to Nasser's people. His former agent, Jorge Mendes took revenge and spoke about the dirtiest issues to all the clubs. That’s why PSG didn’t do it and did Barcola”.
Fear of the belly
After a failed start to the season with OM, Elye Wahi lost his place to the precious Neal Maupay. In the minds of the leaders, Wahi needs time to digest his transfer and understand the Marseille context. A simple question of time? Behind the scenes, there is concern. Because if Wahi is also a flop at OM, we will have to sell him and limit the damage. Lens succeeded by selling it for 30 million euros (Lens had bought it for 35). Not sure that OM will achieve the same “feat”, especially if Jorge Mendes has ruined Wahi's reputation throughout Europe…
