Antoine Griezmann is singled out for his rather dry communication with Didier Deschamps and the Blues when announcing his international retirement.
Since the end of September 2024, the French team has been orphaned by Didier Deschamps' favorite. After 10 years of successful and loyal service, Antoine Griezmann announced his international retirement. If it felt like his place on the team was increasingly in question, it was difficult to expect him to make such a drastic and abrupt decision. The timing of the announcement was therefore strongly criticized. Philippe Sanfourche, head of the Football section at RTL, adds his two cents by revealing how the French team was informed of its choice.
“Antoine Griezmann has not always been exemplary”
« Throughout his career, Antoine Griezmann has been a tremendous player. But, in terms of his communication and his sense of timing in important moments, he has not always been exemplary. I spoke with Guy Stéphan on the phone the day after (the announcement of his international retirement, editor's note) to find out more. He was in Madrid the day before, he spoke with him. He didn't know anything. He didn't have any information. Antoine Griezmann called Didier Deschamps the next morning telling him he was going to make an announcement. It was four days before the list », Explains Philippe Sanfourche who concludes by affirming that Antoine Griezmann no longer felt comfortable in an increasingly renewed French team.
Already criticized for his communication in the club
Criticized for the timing of his announcement of his international retirement, Antoine Griezmann is not at his first attempt. In 2018, a few days before the first World Cup match against Australia, the native of Mâcon published a video in which he announced that he was staying at Atlético de Madrid. He planned to do the same thing in 2019 when he left for FC Barcelona, but the Colchoneros forced him to make a sober video addressed to the supporters… to finally return to the Rojiblancos two years later.
