RC Lens: the touching confidences of Gervais Martel about his illness

Present at Bollaert-Delelis this Saturday for RC – OM, Gervais Martel lifted the veil on the illness which took him away from for a few months.

This Saturday (5 p.m., on beIN Sports 1), Gervais Martel, the emblematic former president of RC Lens, will kick off the clash of the 12th day of Ligue 1 against OM. A moment all the more special as the former leader returns from nowhere following an illness that he had kept secret but which could have taken his life.

In the columns of Voix du this Saturday, Gervais Martel made some poignant confessions: “I seriously missed Bollaert. Because Bollaert is like home. The last match I saw last season was against Eindhoven. Then, I followed all the matches from home or at the hospital. I started my treatment in January and only returned to Bollaert in mid-September. Imagine how long that must have been! »

“I thought I was going to find all my friends up there”

Modestly, the person concerned still has a little difficulty putting into words his cancer, he who is now cured, speaking of a “annoying disease” coupled with a “microbe caught in the hospital”: “I couldn't eat more. I lost 17 kilos. I thought the scale was messing up… There, I've already gained 6 kilos, so that's telling you if it's better (…) At 70, you're never safe from catching some illnesses. It's true, I thought I was going to meet all my friends up there… They told me that I was still called up for the next meeting. So I went back down. I was still on the good scoresheet, not the one that goes to heaven.”
