In an interview with GQ, Cole Palmer revealed behind the scenes of his transfer to Chelsea which took place on the last day of the summer transfer window in 2023, from Manchester City.
Transferred to Chelsea on September 1, 2023 from Manchester City for 47 million euros, Cole Palmer has taken on a new dimension since his departure. In an interview with GQ, the 22-year-old spoke behind the scenes of his transfer, where everything happened quickly for him.
Initially, Cole Palmer thought he would go on loan for the 2023-2024 season. “I didn't even have to go to Chelsea. I let myself be convinced (by his manager, Editor's note)”, explained the person concerned, finally recruited permanently by the Blues. “I knew I wasn't going to play as much as I wanted at Manchester City. When you don't play, it's boring.”
“This is the commercial reality of high-level football”
Everything accelerated for Cole Palmer in the last days of the transfer window. “I remember training on a Wednesday afternoon at City and hearing that they were trying to agree on the amount of compensation,” said Palmer, reflecting on the exchanges between the Skyblues and Chelsea. “Every time the ball went out, I asked someone if they had agreed on the amount of compensation.”
If the agreement was reached, Cole Palmer had to leave in a bit of a hurry. “So I didn't really have the opportunity to see many people and tell them that I was going to leave,” regretted the Englishman a little. “I just had to pack my things. It's the commercial reality of top-level football: no goodbyes, except what you can say by text. I sent a message in the chat group, where I 'said: 'Thank you' and all the rest, 'I'm leaving.' That's all.”
In his first season with Chelsea, Cole Palmer scored 22 Premier League goals. After this exercise, he signed a contract extension with the London club until 2033, he who had initially committed until 2031. Since the start of the current season, Palmer has found the net at seven times in the league, in 11 matches played.
