ASSE travels to Lyon this weekend to play the highly anticipated derby. After two years without opposition, the two best enemies meet again for a match that all fans are waiting for. Present at a press conference, Pierre Sage (OL coach) answered questions from journalists. Excerpts.
“I regret their absence because I am thinking of our own supporters in the return match” (On the absence of Saint-Etienne supporters)
About Saint-Etienne supporters: “I understand the decision, but I find it regrettable, especially thinking of our own supporters for the return match. These kinds of decisions should be fair. In my opinion, we could have considered their presence. I don't know all the elements that motivated this decision, and I imagine that those responsible weighed the pros and cons carefully. However, if I had to make this decision completely neutrally, I would have allowed them to attend the match. »
About Saint-Étienne: “They needed to improve several aspects, which they did well. Now it is up to us to make it even harder and leave them with no hope. It’s up to us to lead the game and keep that commitment to our audience. We will do everything to ensure that the derby goes in our favor. »
“We will have to be effective in recovering after the loss” (Pierre sage, before OL-ASSE)
“Our collective must be more efficient. We have noticed that our collective game is the basis of our performances, and we will organize everything accordingly. Saint-Étienne have gained stability and found a formula that works, but our goal is to surpass what they did well. The fundamental rule remains the same: you have to score one more goal to win, and we will be content with that. »
On the style differences between the two teams: “We have information on them, but to pretend to know exactly how it will go… There will be unforeseen events which will influence the match. We expect to face a strong defense. We will have to be efficient in using the ball and effective in recovering after the loss. We (OL) have points to make up and it is imperative to win on Sunday to return to European places, beyond our current position. »
