Leonardo left PSG and his post as sporting director for the last time in May 2022. The Brazilian nevertheless remains close to news in the Ile-de-France region and would have liked to manage the Mbappé file differently.
The love story between PSG and Leonardo is old and probably not over. The former midfielder held the position of sporting director twice, with contrasting records. The 1994 world champion remains very attached to his former team and, during his period in Paris, had to manage certain soap operas surrounding the false starts of Kylian Mbappé. At the time, the Brazilian wanted to get an honorable price on a sale of the 2018 world champion but above all not give in to his whims. According to him, the club had to remain bigger than the player, which was not really the case following its extension in 2022. Moreover, he was against the latter and fully accepts it while Kylian Mbappé signed freely for Real Madrid during the last transfer window, while claiming 55 million euros in unpaid debts from Paris Saint-Germain.

During an interview given to FigaroLeonardo did not speak wooden words regarding the new Real Madrid player. “His extension? I was against it, at the level that was done. Always. From the start. I even think he was supposed to be sold at the end of the 2020-2021 season, when PSG had an offer from Real Madrid and he only had one year left on his contract. How is it manageable afterwards? If you lose a player, it's annoying, but the club is not going to die. What great institution collapsed by losing a player? None.
