Before turning to OM, Frank McCourt thought about buying Bordeaux. An episode that Nicolas De Tavernost, former owner of the Girondins, has not forgotten.
In the book “Girondins of Bordeaux: investigation into a descent into hell”Nicolas De Tavernost remembered the candidates for the takeover of the Bordeaux club in 2016. Frank McCourt was among them: “In the summer of 2016, the Thai owner of Leicester came. (…) Ultimately, it did not happen because, at the time, we did not find a loophole in the UEFA regulations for multi-ownership. However, there was already Red Bull… There was also a Saudi, but it was very rock'n'roll. I was in Corsica, and we came to Bordeaux in the middle of summer, in August. We saw a guy who owned Lidl… The case was not serious. On the other hand, Frank McCourt almost bought Bordeaux! I met him through the lawyer Didier Poulmaire. We saw each other at Bagatelle, because he had just bought the European Jumping for his new wife. Finally, he chose Marseille after Euro 2016 »confided the former owner of Bordeaux.
As a reminder, Bordeaux was finally bought by an American investment fund in 2018, before being sold to Gérard Lopez in 2021. The Gironde team is currently competing in the National 2 championship, where it is in 12th place…
