Broadcast live on Sunday evening, the Ligue 1 match between Nice and PSG attracted a more impressive audience in Brazil than on the new French broadcaster, DAZN.
DAZN, the new broadcaster of Ligue 1 in France, had high hopes for the poster between l’OGC Nice and the Paris Saint-Germain this Sunday. But, despite the importance of the match, audiences in France did not meet expectations. With around 100,000 subscribers estimated in France, DAZN is still struggling to attract the French public, despite high ambitions of 1.6 million subscribers within two years.
If we assume that all subscribers watched the match, DAZN would have had an audience of around 100,000 viewers for this flagship Ligue 1 match. However, this figure pales in comparison to the audience in Brazil, where around 95,000 people followed Nice-PSG live on YouTube.
The popularity of Ligue 1 in Brazil, in particular thanks to the presence of several Brazilian players in clubs like PSG and Nice, is confirmed by this figure. At the start of the season, Cazé TV, the rights holder for Ligue 1 in Brazil, broadcast the matches for free, which attracted many fans outside the country. But after adjustments, French viewers can no longer access it as easily.
It remains to be seen whether DAZN’s recent promotions in France will have an impact on their subscriber numbers. However, if DAZN is truly stagnating at 100,000 subscribers after all their efforts, it might be time for them to rethink their strategy.
