The prosecution upholds driving with lack of relevant documents and the defense pleads for leniency

Called to the bar this Monday morning to answer for the offence of driving without a licence and insurance, the singer, Sidy Diop, partially admitted the facts before the criminal court.

“I drove without a license but I had insurance,” the accused maintained. Questioned on his motivations for driving without a license, he focused more on the insurance that he claims to have in his possession.

“I was told that the insurance is not compliant. The one I have is valid until 2025,” he said. It emerged from the hearing that the insurance policy number did not match any number in the CNART databases, which led the judge to ask him where he had gotten the document. The singer explained that the insurance was issued to him by his calloborateur who sold him his vehicle. When questioned about the identity of the latter, he said he had forgotten his name.

“I had sent my brother to handle the transactions for the purchase of the car,” said the singer-songwriter.

In his requisition, the Prosecutor contested the validity of the insurance presented by Sidy Diop. According to the representative of the public prosecutor, the document could not exceed 12 months. According to her, the singer produced a false document and had claimed to have a passavant, which the defendant contested.

“I didn’t know the insurance was fake. The owner of the car had provided it to me. He then filed a new insurance policy valid until 2025 at the police station,” he exonerated himself.

Dismissing the charges of producing false documents, the master of prosecutions asked to retain the offence of driving while lacking a licence and insurance. He referred to the judge’s wisdom in determining the sentence to be imposed on the singer.

The defense assisted by Me Aboubacry Barro pleaded for leniency against his client, Sidy Diop who, according to the counsel, showed humility. According to the black robe, his client was the victim of a false insurance policy that was issued to him.

The case will be decided later…
