LIVE! Waiting for Mbappé: Will Real also slip up against Betis?

Real Madrid has put the bumpy start to the season behind them and secured their second win in their second home game. Mbappé was the man of the match against Real Betis Sevilla and celebrated his first goals in the league.

Was the man of the match at the Bernabeu late on Sunday evening: Kylian Mbappé.

Real, who started with Carvajal, Rodrygo and Dani Ceballos instead of Vazquez, Brahim Diaz and Modric compared to the 1-1 draw in Gran Canaria, dominated the game from the start. But they had a particularly hard time creating chances. Instead, it was the guests from Seville who first posed a threat and, through Abde, narrowly missed the chance to take the lead (10′).

Real too harmless before the break

Meanwhile, the Royal team concentrated on putting Mbappé in the spotlight so that the new signing could score his first goal in La Liga in his fourth appearance. But this also caused Real major problems because Betis defended compactly and conceded little. Eder Militao’s header in the 20th minute and Sabalys’s rescue from Mbappé (45th+1) were the only really notable dangerous situations for the Madrilenians in the first half.

It was only after the break that the reigning Champions League winners unleashed more power and almost took the lead, but Vinicius Junior’s low shot from 20 meters only hit the post (50′). The flow of the game suffered from many substitutions and fouls, which meant that Real rarely got into scoring positions and had difficulty scoring.

Mbappé first out of the game, then from the penalty spot

Only an outstanding individual effort by Fede Valverde was able to turn things around in Real’s favour. The Uruguayan’s fine backheel pass reached the onrushing Mbappé, who stayed cool in front of Rui Silva and slotted home his first goal in La Liga (67′).

But that was not all: just seven minutes later, Vinicius Junior fell to the ground in the penalty area after a foul by goalkeeper Rui Silva and won a penalty for the Blancos, which referee Javier Alberola Rojas only awarded after studying the video. Mbappé then took responsibility, of course, and easily outwitted Rui Silva to make it 2-0 (75′).

Nothing happened after that, so Real jumped into second place with the win and stayed on the heels of FC Barcelona. While the Royals are visiting San Sebastian after the upcoming international break (September 15), Betis will host CD Leganes.
