BR24 Sport: The eternal Thomas Müller: goalscorer, record breaker, fence conqueror

Status: 01.09.2024 21:26

Thomas Müller wrote his name in the history books when FC Bayern won at home against Freiburg. With his 710th competitive game for Munich, he is the sole record holder. Teammates, fans, coaches and even the referee celebrated Müller.

Thomas Müller stood majestically above the field of the Munich football arena in the grandstand of the south curve and looked contentedly at his fans. After the final whistle of the match against SC Freiburg (2:0) he climbed over the fence and was cheered by 75,000 people.

In addition to the home win, the 34-year-old gave his fans several reasons to admire him: The traditional player broke a record, made the home crowd cheer with an elegant goal and finally paid them a visit from the stands.

Müller now sole record holder

When Müller was substituted in the 59th minute to thunderous applause and came on for Michael Olise, it was already clear that the Munich player would make a historic appearance. It was his 710th competitive game for FC Bayern Munich. Last week he equalled the legend Sepp Maier, and now he is the sole record holder.

“Records are not important to me”

And as if the evening wasn’t special enough, Müller also scored his team’s second goal. Elegant as ever: Gnabry’s pass, Müller skillfully placed the ball on his left foot, hit it precisely into the top right corner and celebrated – for the 245th time. That’s how many goals he has now scored, plus 269 assists.

“Records like that aren’t that important to me, but rather that I scored a brutally beautiful goal today, technically outstanding, and then it went in. That’s what I enjoy,” Müller said later.

Teammates, opponents, coaches and referees congratulate Müller

But of course Müller also enjoyed the celebrations over this special victory. “710 times 100 percent for FC Bayern and no end in sight. Thank you, chapeau and keep it up, Thomas!” was written on a huge poster in the curve.

Immediately after the final whistle, Müller received beaming congratulations from all sides. His teammates, the opponents, the coaches and even the referees – they all congratulated the 34-year-old, who played his first competitive game for Bayern in August 2008.

Kompany and Kimmich with words of praise

Müller gives his all, not only in games, “but also in training,” said his coach Vincent Kompany: “That’s what makes Thomas so special, he’s 34, but he’s going on and there are still many games to come.” That’s “important: we need him.”

Joshua Kimmich calculated that at Bayern, “if things go well, you’ll get to 50 games.” To reach Müller’s number, you have to “stay absolutely fit and healthy for 14 seasons.” This “alone is sheer madness,” said Kimmich. On top of that, “you also have to get the games. That’s crazy. Not many reach that high number of games – and that for one club. That’s quite a number.”
