Burkina Faso edge closer to qualification with win over Burundi

Burkina Faso secured a 2-0 victory over Burundi in their 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium on Sunday.

The win consolidates the Stallions’ position at the top of Group L with 10 points from four matches, as they edge closer to qualification for the competition to be held in Morocco.

Mohamed Konaté opened the scoring in just the 5th minute with a well-timed header from a Cédric Badolo cross following a corner.

Despite Burundi’s efforts to find an equalizer, Burkina Faso maintained control of the game.

The final blow came in the 94th minute when Bertrand Traoré converted a penalty, sealing the win after a foul by Trésor Mossi on Issa Kaboré.

With this win, Burkina Faso leads Group L with 10 points, three points ahead of Senegalwho will face Malawi in the other group fixture on Tuesday.

Burundi remains in third place with just three points from four matches, while Malawi are bottom without any points after three games.

Burundi had their chances in the match, with Jean Girumugisha hitting the crossbar in the 41st minute.

However, they were unable to break down Burkina Faso’s solid defence, with Farid Ouédraogo in goal making crucial saves.

Late in the second half, Lassina Traoré came close to adding a third goal for Burkina Faso, but his effort hit the bar.

The Burkinabé controlled possession for large periods of the game, forcing Burundi to play on the counter.

With their third win in the group, Burkina Faso remains unbeaten and in a strong position to qualify for the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco.
