Cameroon: the president’s repeated absences sow doubt

While opponents worry about the repeated absences of President Paul Biya, supporters are calling on him to run for an eighth term, at 91 years old.

His state of health raises many questions. At 91 years oldCameroonian President Paul Biya cultivates mystery. In recent months, he has increased the number of absences, increasing the doubts about his ability to lead the country.

Last September, Paul Biya was expected in New York, as part of theUnited Nations General Assemblybut he canceled this trip to rest in Switzerland. Same scenario at the start of the month. The president cancels, at the last minute, his participation in the OIF summit.

Towards an 8th term?

Of the repeated absences who pushed a candidate for the next presidential election to send an open letter to the Presidency of the Republic, asking for more transparency on the health of the Head of State. A letter left unanswered.

At the same time and despite concerns, the president’s supporters are calling on him to run for a new term during the presidential election of 2025. In power since 1984Paul Biya would then be in the running for a 8ᵉ mandate.
