Senegal Teaches a Lesson in the Mbappé Affair

Just like Kylian Mbappé, Ismail Jakobs played a full 90 minutes with his club despite being reported injured for the international break. Senegal quickly responded by recalling the former Monaco player.

An ex-Monaco player declared injured for the international break who still plays with his club? No, we are not talking about Kylian Mbappé, but about Ismail Jakobs.

The Senegalese international had opted out of the next two matches for the Lions of Teranga due to an injury validated by his club Galatasaray with MRI scans. However, on Sunday, the left-back featured for a full match against Alanyaspor for the Turkish club. This prompted an outcry from the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).

“In light of this situation, the Senegalese Football Federation immediately requested the release of the player so that he could honor his call-up to the national team. Player Jakobs, who was not involved in this situation, left Istanbul yesterday and has already joined the camp this Monday morning,” stated the FSF in a communiqué.

The Senegalese federation is well within its rights. During international windows, FIFA mandates clubs to release their players when they are called up for national duty. The French Football Federation (FFF) had the opportunity to enforce Real Madrid to allow Kylian Mbappé to join the French team. However, Didier Deschamps preferred to give his captain some rest, a decision that raises a number of questions.
