Iñaki Williams: ‘I felt sorry for my brother because many things that were said were lies’

The Athletic Club player has spoken out regarding the situation of Nico Williams and the reports linking him to various clubs, particularly FC Barcelona.

After more than five years without making San Mamés a European venue, Athletic Club is back in the Europa League. Under the guidance of Ernesto Valverde, they defeated AZ Alkmaar 2-0 at their home ground. Following the match, Iñaki Williams, who scored one of the two goals, spoke to Radio Marca about his team’s current affairs and commented on his brother amidst the ‘noise’ surrounding his future in recent months.

Regarding his brother Nico and the speculations linking him to FC Barcelona over the last few months, the elder Williams expressed, “It has been quite a complicated summer; I felt very sorry for my brother because many things were being said, and most of them were lies. He has handled it very well. He has made his own decision, he doesn’t regret it, and he is very happy, and so are we because he is the one who decides,” he clarified.

In relation to the final of the current European competition they are participating in, Iñaki stated, “Of course, the final in Bilbao is an incentive for us; we have to tread carefully and we shouldn’t set limits on ourselves – we must dare to dream.”

A few days ago, the Basque club experienced a tense episode during their visit to Rome. Several Athletic Club fans were identified for launching a flare towards the Roma supporters during the Europa League match. Following Paredes’ equalizer five minutes before the end of regular time, this incident occurred, which the Ghanaian forward commented on: “The best example has to be set by the players; football should be a source of enjoyment, and we cannot allow radicals to tarnish a sport meant for leisure. What De Marcos and I did is what all clubs should do,” he concluded.
