Athletic Club made a return to European competition at San Mamés after six years, securing a 2-0 victory against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. Iñaki Williams, one of the goalscorers for the Basque team, was featured in ‘Buenas Noches y Buenos Goles’.
“Playing at San Mamés is always special; I was able to score thanks to my brother’s pass, and it was incredibly exciting,” he acknowledged. The Europa League has become a significant target for the current Copa del Rey champions this season. “The final in Bilbao is clearly a motivation for us; we need to proceed with caution and not set limits, allowing ourselves to dream,” he remarked.
Williams expressed his sadness over the speculation surrounding his brother Nico, who faced numerous rumors this summer about a potential move to FC Barcelona. “It has been a rather complicated summer; I felt sorry for my brother because many things were being said, most of which were false. He has handled it exceptionally well, he made his own decision, he does not regret it, and he is very happy, and so are we because it is he who decides,” he commented.
The Ghana international criticized some Athletic supporters for their behavior in Rome during last week’s match. “We, as players, must set the best example; football is about enjoyment, and we cannot allow radicals to tarnish a leisure sport. What De Marcos and I did is what all clubs should aspire to,” he pointed out.
