A T-shirt with a long history. A picture with Kowal before Legia’s match with Betis

It is always a pleasant image when our player is appreciated in leagues stronger than ours, and even more pleasant when it is a figure connecting a Polish club with a foreign one during their clash in European cups. Real Betis and its right defender Hector Bellerin do not forget about Wojtek Kowalczyk in such moments.

62 appearances, 14 goals, the status of the favorite (and only) Pole in the club’s history – this is Kowal’s record in Betis. The former Polish representative is fondly remembered in Sevilla by fans, players and the authorities of the club where he played in 1994-1997.

Current president Rafael Gordillo? A buddy from the field. Right-back Hector Bellerin? A friend from taking photos together. The paths of Bellerin and Kowalczyk crossed for the first time in 2022. The Spaniard then celebrated Betis’ triumph in the King’s Cup wearing a T-shirt with the name of the silver medalist of the Barcelona Games. The photo then circulated on the Internet, both in Poland and in Spain.

Two weeks later, the former footballer was honored by the Andalusian club with a commemorative T-shirt, which he received before the match against Barcelona. The number 672 was on the shirt because Kowalczyk was the 672nd player to play for Betis.

During this visit to Sevilla, Kowalczyk and Bellerin had the opportunity to meet for the first time, and it happened… by accident. The former and current footballer simply bumped into each other in a restaurant. It adds charm to the whole story of this friendship that the players had the opportunity to actually get to know each other on the streets of their beloved city, and not through the club’s media activities.

Before today’s match between Legia and Betis in Warsaw as part of the Conference League, the players couldn’t help but see each other again. It may seem like a small thing, but it’s to see a player from one of the top Spanish teams holding our player’s jersey. You can feel the atmosphere of genuine respect and mutual sympathy in all this. The club captioned the photo: “A shirt with a long history. Nice to see you again, Kowalczyk!” And we’re glad to see such pictures again.

The match between Legia Warszawa and Real Betis starts today at 6:45 p.m.
