Villarreal defeated last-place Las Palmas 3-1 at home, a result that helped them surpass Atlético in the standings and place third, this Monday at the close of the eighth day of the League.
The yellows have 17 points, one more than the red and white. Ahead, Real Madrid has 18 and the leader Barcelona has 21.
“Winning today was important. First to put us third, second to win again at home, which has to be a fortress. We played a great game, we deserved the three points. Happy with the effort,” summarized Villarreal midfielder Dani Parejo .
At the Cerámica stadium Nicolas Pepe put the local team ahead just before half-time (44) but upon returning from the locker room Fabio Silva equalized (46), with a chipped ball over Diego Conde.
Villarreal was able to take the lead with a penalty taken by Álex Baena that was cleared by Croatian goalkeeper Dinko Horkas (50).
Baena, who had entered in the second half, overcame in a big way. The Spanish international assisted for Thierno Barry (84) and scored the third (90+7).
