Sahin relieved: “In the end we deserved to win”

Nuri Sahin was relieved; the Borussia Dortmund coach kept breathing deeply after the show of strength against VfL Bochum. “That’s the process we’re discussing. It can quickly go south. If the third goal is scored, we have a huge problem. Sometimes you have to suffer in order to learn,” said Sahin, whose team turned 0-2 into a fourth :2 had done.

“I saw a development in terms of clarity. That we keep playing, keep trying, even if it’s 0-2 in our own stadium,” said Sahin on DAZN: “In the end we deserved to win.” Bayer Leverkusen distinguished and perfected their ability to keep going in the 2023/2024 championship season.

After the early “hit in the neck” by Matus Bero (16th) and an “unforced error” by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who lost the ball and thus invited Dani de Wit (21st) to Bochum’s second goal, “you first run after, and of course they had the killer moment.” Sahin was referring to Bochum’s huge chance to make it 3-0, which Myron Boadu (33′) missed.

Captain Emre Can said Dortmund had started well – and yet “suddenly we were 2-0 down”. Things didn’t look “good” then, “we also had the defeat in Stuttgart on our minds,” admitted Can, referring to the 5-1 defeat at VfB last weekend.

However, BVB cannot always afford to fall behind and chase with a lot of effort. “We have to be there from the first minute, we have to learn that. I hope we learn it because it happens often. Nevertheless, we showed character,” said Can, scorer of the 2-2 (61st) penalty kick.

Serhou Guirassy (44th, 75th) and Felix Nmecha (81st) also scored. “I’m super grateful that the team stepped up their game after the 2-0 defeat,” said goalkeeper Kobel, who “clearly” described the loss of the ball for Dortmund’s second goal as “my mistake.” The fact that it was still enough to achieve a third win in the third home game was “a nice thing, I’m super proud.”
