City warns visitors of inconvenience

The city of Dortmund has announced that there will be “extensive personal and bag checks” for the Festival of Lights on Saturday. What visitors need to be aware of.

Dortmund – Like every year in late summer, Dortmund’s Westfalenpark will be a luminous spectacle on Saturday (31 August). The park around the Florianturm will be ablaze with colourful lights. But to make the evening as pleasant and safe as possible for all visitors, the city of Dortmund is pointing out that there will be “extensive personal and bag checks”.

The event opens its doors at 4 p.m.so that visitors have enough time and the rush at the entrances is not quite so great.

The nostalgic fair, the children’s activities at the Rainbow House and the cable car are already open from this time. The official program of the Dortmund Festival of Lights 2024 does not begin until 6pm.

To ensure that all guests can enjoy a relaxed and safe evening, “extensive personal and bag checks” are planned at the entrances, as the city of Dortmund explains in a press release. Accordingly, there are warnings about inconveniences such as longer waiting times. Glass container are not permitted for safety reasons.

Instead, each visitor is allowed to 0.5 litres of non-alcoholic beverage in one PET bottle bring along. Children’s vehicles such as tricycles or balance bikes are also not permitted in the park (read more news from Dortmund at RUHR24).

Dortmund Festival of Lights 2024: Save time when looking for parking and when entering

As a large number of visitors is expected, the city recommends travelling by public transport. For those who prefer to come by car, the designated Parking areas available.

If you want to save some extra time, you can use the Tickets You can buy tickets online in advance on the city’s website. Tickets can also be bought on site, but you often have to wait in line for a few minutes. If you buy tickets online, however, you pay a pre-sale fee of 0.71 cents. A ticket then costs 13.21 euros instead of the usual 12.50 euros.

If you buy tickets on site, you can buy them at the box office at the Baurat-Marx-Allee, Florianstraße, Ruhrallee and Blütengärten entrances. Both cash and debit card payments are possible here.

Dortmund increases rail traffic at the Festival of Lights: “Several tens of thousands of visitors expected”

And since not only the Festival of Lights in Westfalenpark is taking place on August 31st, but also the harbor walk in the north of Dortmund, the city is increasing rail traffic. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected for these two major events. A large proportion of them will rely on public transport in the evening.

In order to cope with the rush, “everything with wheels is rolling on the trams,” says the Dortmund public utility company. Most lines will run about an hour longer that evening, with the U45 and U46 even until 2 a.m. are on the way.

In addition, the lines U45 and U49 between Westfalenpark and main station reinforcedto ensure that visitors to the Festival of Lights can make their way home smoothly after the fireworks. At popular stops such as Westfalenpark and Märkische Straße, access will be additionally regulated to avoid congestion.
