Festival of Lights Competition – Full Event Weekend in Dortmund

Dortmund. So many great events in one weekend! If you don’t know where to go in Dortmund on Saturday and Sunday – the choice is huge.

Dortmund is another exciting Event weekend The highlights of the month change from 31 August to 1 September are certainly the Festival of Lights in Westfalenpark and the Harbour walk. There is no shortage of events on Sunday either: in three suburbs shops are open on Sundays due to district festivals. In 2023, even the Bartholomew Fair in Lütgendortmund fell on the Lichterfest weekend – but in 2024 the popular fair will be over a week later. These events are taking place in Dortmund this weekend:

Festival of Lights 2024 in Westfalenpark:

The lights festival in Dortmund’s Westfalenpark attracts thousands of visitors every year. The park opens at 4 p.m. and the program starts at 6 p.m. In addition to children’s fire shows, music and many food trucks, there is of course also the absolute highlight: the fireworks display starts at around 10.30 p.m. – probably the largest and most beautiful in the region.

Harbour walk 2024:

As in 2023, the big day of the Dortmund port will again be on the same weekend as the Festival of Lights in 2024. During the harbor walk, there will be events, activities, demonstrations, guided tours, art and concerts all over the district. There will also be a pontoon bridge over the water with a view of a light and art installation in the Schmiedinghafen. In total, there will be 70 events in 50 locations! After all, the Dortmund port will be an impressive 125 years old.

Musical gala on Friedensplatz:

1974! For the Dortmund Philharmonic, the anniversary of the Abba classic “Waterloo” is a wonderful opportunity to present the Swedish pop group’s greatest hits in opulent orchestral versions at the Cityring concerts. For example, “50 Years of Waterloo – A Tribute to Abba” will see Friedensplatz in Dortmund’s city center transformed into an open-air concert hall. And on Sunday, it continues: With “The Wizard of Oz,” the Cityring concerts will bring a scenic family concert to the city center stage at 11 a.m.

Summersounds DJ picnic in Westpark:

The Summersounds DJ picnics have been one of the chillest events in town for years. Electronic sounds, summer vibes, dancing or just lying on a blanket in the grass – good music and great company are guaranteed. Musically, the genres range from deep house to afro house with DJs Ingo Sänger, Carsten Hellmich and Eve Tchari. If you don’t have any picnic snacks with you, you can get something from the street food and drinks stands.

Yard sales in the Kreuzviertel:

One of the biggest yard sale events of the year completes the list of events: the Kreuzviertel is the venue for the yard sale series, which takes place almost every weekend during the warmer months. Of all the neighborhood flea markets, this date is one of the most popular – there are particularly many people out and about here.

Garden flair at Bodelschwingh Castle:

Bodelschwingh Castle on the northwestern outskirts of Dortmund hides a dreamy castle park behind its old garden walls. The gates to this “secret garden” only open on special occasions – at the Gartenflair! This weekend, Baron and Baroness zu Knyphausen are once again inviting you to the popular summer festival of the senses and pleasures, with delicacies, hand-made art objects, plants and culinary specialties.

District festival in Hombruch (shopping Sunday):

After “Viva Hombruch” and “Hombruch Caribbean”, this year’s traditional district festival is once again focusing on Italy. The “Fiesta de la Dolce Vita” will feature lots of live music, fun for children and a bike race through the town. The shops will also be open on Sunday.

Michaelmas Festival in Mengede (shopping Sunday):

At the Michaelmas Festival around the Mengede market square, there is not only a small fair for the whole family, but also lots of live music on the stage in the Amtshaus Park, the “largest beer garden in Mengede”. In addition, shops are open on Sunday.

Aplerbeck Apple Market – Sunday shopping:

From August 30th to September 3rd, the Aplerbeck Apple Market 2024 will take place in the town center. The largest district festival in southern Dortmund offers a craft market as well as a colorful stage program. And shops are open on Sunday.
