Serie A | Inter 4-0 Atalanta: Player ratings – Thuram and Barella star – Football Italia – August 31

Simone Inzaghi and Inter rose to a thumping 4-0 victory over Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta in Serie A on a busy Friday night, thanks to a Berart Djimsiti own goal, a Nicolo Barella screamer and two from the in-form Marcus Thuram.

Check out the player ratings from Friday’s thriller in San Siro.

Inter 4-0 Atalanta – Player ratings

Inter: Summer 6; Pavard 6, Acerbi 7, Bastoni 6; Darmian 6.5; Barella 8, Calhanoglu 7, Mkhitaryan 7; Thuram 8.5, Lautaro Martinez 6.

Best Inter player: Thuram 8.5 – Whenever he scores, he always tends to get another these days. Thuram looks like he’s stepped it up a notch in the early stages of the 2024-25 season. He began the night by forcing an error from Berat Djimsiti for Inter’s first goal, then added two more in the second half with identical finishes inside the area. The performance had a bit of everything, though, as he was quick on the break and linked up nicely with his teammates in the build-up, too. He now sits pretty at the top of the Serie A goalscoring charts with four from his first three. Two Best Player ratings from Football Italia to boot.

Coach: Simonen Inzaghi 9 – Any questions of a post-Scudetto hangover are now completely off the table. Two clean sheets and six goals scored from the last two matches, four of them on Friday night, it doesn’t get much better than that. Even if Gian Piero Gasperini described his Atalanta side as a team in ‘emergency’ mode, getting a 4-0 victory should certainly not be sniffed at.

Atalanta: Carnesecchi 5; De Roon 4.5; Djimsiti 4, Ruggeri 5; Bellanova 5; Ederson 5, Pasalic 5.5, Zappacosta 5; Samardzic 5, Brescianini 5; Retegui 4.5.

Best Atalanta player: Pasalic 6 – It might have been easier to select Atalanta’s worst player, rather than their best. This time it goes to Mario Pasalic, who put in a trying shift, but was never going to be able to turn the result around single-handedly. Atalanta’s players largely come away with similar ratings. Put simply, they were not good enough on a collective level, nor individually. Work to be done.

Coach: Gian Piero Gasperini 5 – After a hectic summer in the transfer market, Atalanta are certainly not the finished product yet. New signings will need time to gel, and it will always be tough having to go without a star player like Teun Koopmeiners. That said, and even though Gasperini has called for patience with his new-look side, it was surprising to see them capitulate so easily and so early on against Inter, even if they are the reigning champions. Particularly concerning following the 2-1 loss to Torino last time out. A much needed break comes next, before Atalanta’s first home game of the season at their recently-renovated stadium.
