Portugal: Mamadou Gassama’s Sporting CP wins the Super Cup by beating Benfica (37-21)

Last weekend, Mamadou Gassama’s Sporting CP dominated their rivals Benfica Lisbon to win the Portuguese Handball Super Cup (37-21). A derby match to win the first title of the season and take the temperature of the 2024/2025 season for the champions and title holders.

If winning three national titles the previous season was not enough proof of strength, Sporting started the new season by removing any doubts that were still present. It was the Lions who took the lead in the first half against the Eagles, with a 10-goal difference at the break, 20-10.

While Benfica lost ground and, worse, with the sending off of Alexis Borges eight minutes into the second half, Sporting opened up a gap that rose to 15 goals before the middle of the second half. From that moment on, Mamadou Gassama and his men, without slowing down and rotating the team, strolled around the Póvoa de Varzim court, while Benfica tried to finish the game without being humiliated.

With a remarkable victory of 16 goals difference thanks to a relentless defense that annihilated all the attempts of attack of the opponents and a great offensive fluidity that wreaked havoc in Portugal and in Europe last season. It is undeniable that Sporting Clube Portugal has once again demonstrated its strength and won the fifth Super Cup in its history. The new season begins like the previous season with an additional trophy. Gassama scored 2 goals in this match.
