Updated this Friday, September 6, 2024, at 4 p.m. : This Friday, Météo France placed seven departments on orange alert for rain-flooding and flooding, for this Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, almost all of France is on yellow alert for storms.

Météo France is increasing the number of yellow or orange alerts for storms, rain-flooding, and even floods this week, and it’s not over yet. While the South-West is affected this Friday, September 6, 2024, many regions are expected to be very wet this Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8, 2024 as well, as weather models have been indicating for a few days.

Brittany, Normandy, Center, South-East…

Brittany, Normandy, central France and the South-East – and in particular the Valence area (Drôme) – seem to be the areas most likely to receive a lot of rain between now and Monday 9 September, explains actu.fr meteorologist Yann Amice.

After the stormy rains of the night from Friday to Saturday, from the Basque country to the Centre via Limousin, almost the entire country should be subjected to bad weather, sometimes intense.

Sunday, September 8, 2024, it is the South-East (again) that could find itself once again under heavy stormy rains. Brittany will not be spared either.

At the beginning of the day this Saturday, the intense precipitations should stretch from the interior of New Aquitaine to the Centre, and overflow into Normandy, Brittany and Île-de-France. They will then shift towards the east and north during the day, between Cévennes, Auvergne, Burgundy, Champagne and Île-de-France, Brittany and Normandy still in the afternoon.

Bad weather linked to a cold drop from high altitude

On Saturday evening, this band of rain and storms should then move from the Rhone Valley to Franche-Comté, Lorraine and near the Belgian border, then gradually limit itself to the Alps during the following night while weakening, estimates Météo France.

“These heavy rains are linked to a conflict between cold air at altitude (in connection with the cold drop at altitude) which is stagnating over the country and the very hot air which is rising further east,” explains Yann Amice.

On Sunday, September 8, sustained rain is expected along the English Channel, particularly between eastern and northern Brittany and the tip of Cotentin. This could cause significant accumulations. Stormy rain will also develop over a quarter of the south-east of the country, between the Rhone Valley, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and Corsica, during the afternoon and evening. Here too, the accumulations of rain could be significant.

What’s next? At the beginning of next week, a change in the weather is set to take shape with the arrival of much cooler air. “A maritime polar northwest current that will invade Western Europe,” warns meteorologist Yann Amice, and cause a drop in temperatures from Tuesday, September 10, 2024. You have been warned.
