Treatment for this degenerative disease could help slow AMD

Age-related macular degeneration, better known as AMD, is a disease of the retina caused by progressive degeneration of the macula, the central part of the retina. Today, it is the leading cause of visual impairment in people over 50. As disabling as it is, AMD never causes total blindness, as the peripheral part of the retina remains intact. The disease exists in two forms, with roughly equal prevalence: the atrophic or “advanced dry” form and the neovascular form known as “exudative” or “wet”. While the former currently has no curative treatment, the latter can be slowed down by injections regularly administered into the eye. These are called intravitreal injections. Although necessary, these can nevertheless represent a significant therapeutic burden for patients. This is why researchers are constantly working to try to develop new alternative treatments. Today, the French are announcing that they have made a major breakthrough in the field.
