The lives of part of humanity could well change in about forty minutes. If we are to believe the announcements made at the end of August and notably relayed by the online media New Atlas, it would be enough to put on the Diadem helmet for this duration to chase away physical or mental suffering. Developed by researchers at the University of Utah, this ultrasound headband that looks like a headset has the ability to fight against pain and depression.
The Diadem works through a technique called neuromodulation, which involves sending beams of ultrasonic frequencies to targeted areas of the brain. In experiments with the device, the device was used to target the anterior cingulate cortex, a brain region responsible for pain perception and emotional processing.
In the physical pain study, each of the twenty chronic pain subjects received two sessions with the Diadem after undergoing a functional MRI scan that allowed the precise identification of the brain regions responsible for pain signaling. At the end of the study, 60% of patients experienced at least a one-third reduction in pain immediately after treatment.
In the second study, fourteen patients with clinical depression were treated with the Diadem procedure. One week later, after a single session with the device, ten of them reported entering remission. These astonishing results will obviously need to be confirmed through experiments conducted on larger samples, but they are more than promising.
