Joe Biden plans trip to Angola in coming weeks

He promised it, and he looks set to deliver. Joe Biden is reportedly planning a trip to Angola before the November 5 presidential election. He would be the first US president to visit Africa since Barack Obama in 2015. The trip is still being finalized, but it would be further evidence that Washington is looking to repair its relationship with Africa.

The White House has declined to comment on Joe Biden’s travel plans for the time being. Angolabut the American press is already talking about it, in particular, because this trip was on the calendar. Planned for last year, it was postponed after the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.

While he was still a candidate in the American presidential election, Joe Biden had said in May 2024 that he would travel to Africa in February 2025 if he won the election. His withdrawal from the campaign allows him to make the trip earlier than planned.

Repairing the relationship with Africa

The American president is keen to repair the relationship between the United States and the African continent. He is aware that the latter is unhappy with his support for Israel against Gaza, he also knows that it is quick to give in to Chinese influence. President Biden is also being criticized by the American press for not having succeeded in countering Beijing and Moscow more on the ground.
