Some medications must be taken with food: here are which ones

Some medications need to be taken “with meals” while others need to be taken “away from meals”. How can we explain this difference? Interviewed by our colleagues at The Conversation, Dr. Mary Bushell (who is a pharmacist at the University of Canberra – in Australia) explains everything to us.

Medicines are absorbed less quickly by the body

First thing to know: Dr. Mary Bushell explains that when the stomach is full, medications (taken orally, that is) are absorbed more slowly by the body. In detail, drugs arrive less quickly in the small intestine, at which point they pass into the bloodstream. Thanks to this phenomenon, certain drugs (which could be “aggressive” for the body) see their side effects will diminish. So, while they do indeed act less quickly, they are also less harmful. Furthermore, some studies (which remain controversial) claim that taking medication during meals contributes to reduce their toxicity – on the kidneys or stomach, for example.
