these other destinations where a visa is already essential for the French

TRAVEL – The passport is not always a pass-partout. While the United Kingdom abruptly announced on Thursday, September 12, the upcoming introduction of a visa for foreign tourists, including French nationals, the tightening of these rules on the other side of the Channel reminds us that France is relatively protected when it comes to travel outside its borders.

So that couple’s arguments don’t ruin the holidays, these therapists have some advice

Because if the European Union allows free movement of Europeans within the Schengen area (an identity document is enough), the French can also travel without too much paperwork in some countries.

But many other destinations do not escape a visa requirement to enter their territory. Le HuffPost offers you an overview of the different possible scenarios for a short-term tourist visa application.

· Passport without visa

Visa-free travel is possible in much of South America. In Mexico, a valid passport is sufficient for 180 days of travel. The same applies to Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru or Chile, although the length of stay is limited to 90 days.

It is also possible to travel to Asia without a visa: 15 days in China, 30 in Mongolia, or 90 for Japan or South Korea. In Africa, some countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal or South Africa also allow you to travel for three months using a simple French passport.

· Passport and electronic travel authorization

Things get more complicated when you want to travel to countries like the United States, Canada, Australia or Saudi Arabia. As for the United States and Canada, a visa is required to enter the country, unless you obtain a ” Electronic Travel Authorization (ESTA) » for a maximum period of 90 days. The paid application (valid for two years in the United States, five for Canada) must be made on the only site authorized by the American and Canadian authorities. It is recommended to make the application more than 72 hours before departure.

In Australia, a free tourist e-visa will be required from travelers for a maximum stay of three months. For Saudi Arabia, this time, you must apply for a multiple-entry e-visa for 90 days on site, for a sum of approximately 124 euros.

· Passport and visa on arrival

Another possibility exists in Colombia, Indonesia or Zambia. For all these destinations, a residence permit will be issued to you upon arrival in the territory, generally upon presentation of a return plane ticket.

Valid for 90 days in Colombia and Zambia, this visa on arrival is valid for 30 days in Indonesia, for a fee of €30. Other countries such as Iraq, Cambodia and Madagascar operate on the same principle, although this option remains relatively rare.

· Passport and visa at the embassy

The last scenario, mainly in force on the African continent or in countries such as Bangladesh or Afghanistan: obtaining a visa on request from the consulate or embassy of the country in France. This is also the case for most trips to Russia, even if the process can be done online.

In the case of Algeria, the application for a tourist visa (110 euros) for 90 days can be made in one of the 18 Algerian consulates on French soil, upon presentation of a certificate of accommodation, a hotel reservation or a certificate from a travel company.

To travel to Afghanistan or Bangladesh, a short-term (30 days) single-entry visa will be issued by the Afghan or Bangladeshi embassy in France. For the latter country, it is also possible to obtain a visa on arrival, although obtaining it cannot be guaranteed in all cases.
