Hospital clowns, unexpected healers for hospitalized children

No, clowns are not the nightmare creatures you think. Instead of terrorizing them, like It, the most famous but especially frightening clown, and main antagonist of Stephen King’s novel of the same name – they could actually cure them! Let us explain. The fear of clowns, often fueled by cultural representations, like the one straight out of the American author’s tense imagination, is shared by many people. It even has a scientific name, coulrophobia, literally the excessive and irrational fear of these clowns. It is not surprising, then, that the arrival of a clown in their child’s hospital room worries parents, concerned for their well-being, and fearing that it will add more stress than comfort to their little one. But if we forget for a moment the latent weight of our culture on our psyche, these pranksters could, according to a serious study, help to cure hospitalized children.

This study conducted by the Carmel Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, reveals that children visited by clowns during their hospital stay tend to return home more quickly. Led by Karin Yaacoby-Bianu, a pediatrician and researcher, a study was conducted on a group of 51 young patients, aged 2 to 18, suffering from pneumonia.
