More than one in two women are affected by vasomotor disorders (in other words, hot flashes) during menopause. They can occur during the day or at night, and although they are not serious, they still significantly disrupt the daily lives of many women. When the symptoms of menopause are really difficult to bear, treatment consists of taking hormones to compensate for the drop in estrogen levels. However, this treatment is not suitable for all women due to the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is not recommended for women over 60 and the duration of treatment should be as short as possible.

A new treatment without hormones

For all women who suffer from hot flashes, hope may come from a new drug, elinzanetant, developed by the Bayer laboratory. The main characteristic of this treatment: it works without hormones and acts directly on the neurons responsible for regulating body temperature. “This new molecule will block the signaling pathway of these neurons,” explains to France Inter the gynecologist Florence Trémollières, director of the menopause center at the Toulouse University Hospital. “And by normalizing their activity, it will change that thermoregulatory zone and make sure women don’t have hot flashes.”
