INTERNATIONAL – The Israeli army said a missile fired from Yemen fell on an uninhabited area in central Israel on Sunday, September 15, without causing any injuries. The strike was not immediately claimed, but Yemen’s Houthi rebels have already launched several attacks against Israel, claiming to act in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where a war has pitted Israel against the Palestinian Hamas for nearly a year.

“A surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing central Israel from the east and then falling in an open area”the Israeli army said in a statement, adding that“No injuries were reported”. In a subsequent statement, she clarified that the “missile was fired from Yemen”.

“The explosions heard in the last few minutes come from the interception system (of the missiles). The result of the interception is currently being examined.”the army added.

Minor injuries and a fire

Sirens sounded in central Israel before the missile landed, the army said. Israeli media reported that many people then rushed to shelters in the Tel Aviv area.

Magen David Adom, Israel’s equivalent of the Red Cross, said in a statement that its paramedics evacuated nine people with minor injuries as they headed to shelters.

Israeli firefighters were extinguishing a fire in the city of Lod after part of the missile fell in central Israel, according to an AFP photographer.

According to CNNvideos and images shared by the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority on Telegram show large columns of smoke rising into the air above an open field and shattered glass inside a train station in Modi’in, a city between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

« Israel must expect the worst”

The Lebanese news agency Al-Mayadeen, quoted by the Israeli media Haaretzreported that, according to a Yemeni source, Yemen is expected to reveal details shortly about the target of the missile launched towards central Israel.

The source said that “As long as Israeli aggression continues in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, Israel must expect the worst”.

Last July, the Houthis carried out a drone attack on Tel Aviv that killed an Israeli civilian. In retaliation, the Israeli military bombed the Houthi-controlled Yemeni port of Hodeida on July 20, and the Yemeni rebel leader said ” inevitable “ a response to this attack.

The Israeli military said in a statement Saturday that about 40 projectiles were fired from Lebanon into the Upper Galilee and the northern Syrian Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied and annexed. Some of them were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas. There were no injuries.

Simultaneously, an explosive drone was identified crossing Lebanese territory, falling in the Metula area. No damage was caused in the community area and no injuries were reported, the army said.
