Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said: his country “supports” all ceasefire efforts deployed by Qatar, Egypt and the United States to end the current violence in Gaza.

A meeting, hosted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, brought together the foreign ministers of Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, Norway, Turkey and Egypt on Friday.

Also present were the Secretary General of the Arab League, the Minister of State of Qatar and the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell.

United around the two-state solution

Speaking to reporters, Jose Manuel Albares stressed that the contact group is currently “united around the implementation of the two-state solution”.

“We, the States gathered here, have formed a group that is not limited by geography, but is united by a common goal, that of inspiring the international community to concerted action.”he says.

He added that the Israeli citizens held hostage must be released, but that the Gaza Strip also needed a “massive, immediate and unhindered arrival of humanitarian aid”.

Spain, along with Norway and Ireland, have already officially recognized the Palestinian state on May 28, a decision that angered Israel.
