When a rugby match begins, twenty-three players are checked off on the match sheet by a coach. The latter then enter the meadow with one and the same objective, to win, however they will not all do the same thing to achieve it. Depending on the position, they will also receive different salaries.

Pillar, winger, fly-half, center… the work of a rugby player is very different depending on the position occupied. As in all professions, the worker is therefore paid according to their strengths and the prerequisites of their position.

Second row: a position that pays off in the Top 14

In its December 23, 2024 edition, Le Midi Olympique publishes the results of a study on the remuneration of French rugby players. According to the results, the average salary would be 259,000 euros gross per yearor 21,000 euros monthly.

If we look at position by position, we realize that the players occupying 2e line are the best paid in the championship. A number 4 would be paid on average between €250,000 and €260,000 while a number 5 would receive between €270,000 and €280,000. Ranges which can be explained by the scarcity of profiles capable of meeting the physical and technical dimension of 2e ligne.

With an annual range going from €260,000 to €270,000, a 3e line center is expensive, just like an opener or a center whose average pay is between €250,000 and €260,000. The lowest paid players would be the wingers, hookers and left props with an average salary of around €190,000.

According to information from Midi Olympique, the highest paid players in the Top 14 would receive around 600,000 euros per year. Unsurprisingly, Antoine Dupont, Owen Farrell, Grégory Alldritt, Will Skelton and Mathieu Jalibert would be among them.
