Pro D2 – Soyaux-Angoulême wins with bonus against and climbs into the top 6

The slap received last week in could have dampened the enthusiasm of Soyaux-Angoulême before hosting in this 15th day of Pro D2 but the opportunity was too good for the Charentais to host a Nivernaise team, certainly in good shape, but takeable far from his stadium. And above all an opportunity to invest in the top 6 in the event of increased success. And if everything was not easy for Alexandre Ruiz's men, especially in the first half, the second half was a healthy run allowing them to seal the 5 points with a 28-0 past USON Nevers (35 -10). The match was not a demonstration of SAXV, far from it, but the job was done and calmly.

Soyaux-Angoulême had a lot to lose this evening against Nevers, a team less well placed in the standings, not transcendent away but which remained on two successes including its first away. The heavy defeat suffered by the Charentais in Oyonnax a week ago was inevitably in people's minds but Alexandre Ruiz's group was able to raise its head and win this evening in Chanzy. The improved victory of Soyaux-Angoulême against Nevers did not suffer from any dispute especially in the second half when the SAXV were alone on their lawn. An important victory for the Angoumoisins who enter the top 6 (5th) and further assert their ambitions.

The beautiful start of USON Nevers

The intentions were there from the start for the Angoumoisins but it was indeed Nevers who struck from the start, quickly and well, to respond to the opposing inaccuracies. From his first offensive, Nevers penetrated the opposing 22 m and broke the lock by Steven David, a force of nature who completed a three-quarter work initiated by Perry Mayo at the back and continued by Jules-Rosette and Pommelet on the right wing (6th, 0-7). While the Charentais accumulated indiscipline errors, the USON set the table again with points taken during their second visit to the 22 m of Soyaux. A new fault offered a penalty against the poles that Shaun Reynolds did not disdain (12th, 0-10).

Unfortunately for USON Nevers, it was the start of a period of more than 68 minutes without any further points validated. By taking its time, SAXV gradually erased the approximations and after a few minutes, after more intensive domination, finally scored its first points. Jon May made a difference with his canes before the ball quickly came out of the package for Lemardelet who scored strongly (20th, 7-10). Soyaux-Angoulême continued to push but missed opportunities like this forward from Nathan Farissier when flattening (33rd). We reached the break with this surprising lead for Nevers but far from being illogical.

SAXV, a second solo period

The second half had almost nothing to do with the first. “Almost” because of the first five minutes which looked too much like the last five minutes of the first period, which were insipid. After that, it was just a game of offensive pleasure for the Charentais who were going to score four new tries in order to take and then consolidate their bonus.

The second try by the local players allowed Farissier to redeem himself from his previous opportunity by being at the conclusion of a nice movement from the Charentais backs started by Botica and Proult with the help of their 15 Dubecq perfectly inserted on the left wing (47th, 14-10). SA took the lead for the first time in this match which was no longer subject to opposition. Ten minutes later, Arthur Proult, in the 22 m of Nevers showed changes of support to scare a former injured knee for the test under the posts (57th, 21-10). The Charentais did not offer incredible things but the physical decline of Nevers was such that differences were exploited everywhere.

It was the new arrival George Tilsley who would leave his mark at the end of the match with a double. In the 68th minute, he took a ball from the back of the line 8 meters away on a combination for his team's 4th try, the bonus (28-10). A few seconds later he was on the receiving end of a small game at the perfectly calibrated foot of Ben Botica (100% in his transformations) to plant the 5th try (71st, 35-10). A 28-0 in the second half, a 35-0 over the two halves and virtually no danger of losing this bonus point at the end of the match. Soyaux-Angoulême pulled off one of the good moves of this 15th day.
