Faced with the future departure of Benjamin UrdapilletaASM Clermont is actively exploring the opener market and seems to have set its sights on the Argentinian Thomas Albornozunder contract in Italy.
According to Rugby Primethe Auvergne club is particularly interested in this Argentinian international to strengthen its squad from next season. An ambitious and complex operation which could breathe new life into the Clermont team.
A quest for a high-level replacement for Clermont
The announcement of the departure of Benjamin Urdapilleta pushes the club to look for a fly-half capable of taking the Clermont game to the highest level. After several failures in negotiations, notably with the Englishman George Ford, the ASM is studying new international solutions to fill this strategic position.
The Argentinian international Thomas Albornozcurrently under contract with the Benetton Treviso until 2026, is among the favorites to join Clermont. The opener recently shone during the Autumn Nations Seriesdemonstrating his qualities against Italy with a total of 20 points. A performance which reinforced the interest of Clermont’s leaders.
Towards a Hervé-Albornoz duo for next season?
While waiting to finalize this Argentinian file, Clermont could formalize the arrival ofEnzo Hervé from RC Toulon in the coming days. The latter would strengthen the depth of the position, while leaving open the possibility of integrating Albornoz as a starter to expand the playing options.
Strategic recruitment on hold
While Albornoz's contractual situation remains an obstacle, ASM is actively continuing its discussions to break its commitment with Treviso.
This transfer, if it materializes, could breathe new life into the Auvergne club in search of stability and performance after the departure of Urdapilleta.
I grew up in a family where rugby was at all times. I was at the edge of the pitch when Castres beat Pau and joined the elite, I was in the Stade Pierre Antoine facing Gary Whetton when he did his Haka to celebrate the 1993 Brennus and I was always rocked legends of this sport. Now, it is with XV Ovalie that I intend to extend the adventure. #TeamCO
