TRANSFER. Between the Top 14 and Japan, this former champion made his choice

It’s official! Richie Gray will discover Japan next season. At 35, the veteran with 79 caps for Chardon is preparing to settle down at Toyota Verblitz.

The Japanese club announced the signing of the Scotland international on Tuesday, an arrival which could mark a turning point for the Japan Rugby League One side.

Gray, known for his solidity in touch, will find two emblematic figures of world rugby: Steve Hansen and Ian Foster.

The former All Blacks coaches now lead the Toyota outfit, which finished seventh in the table last season. With their experience, there is no doubt that they will be able to get the best out of the Scottish colossus.

This isn’t the first time Gray has moved away from Europe. He had already played in for and , before returning to Scotland with Glasgow Warriors. By leaving his native land again, he once again shows his taste for new challenges.

Toyota Verblitz is clearly looking to strengthen its scrum and aerial game. Gray, at 2m08 and 126 kilos, should bring power and experience.

The Japanese championship regularly attracts big names and Gray is a new example. The Scot’s new club counts former All Black Aaron Smith and two-time World Cup winner Pieter-Steph du Toit in its squad.
