Amateur rugby: Discover the new rules that will come into force on the field from February 8

The French Federation and the National Rugby League have implemented new rules since the beginning of 2025 in the professional world. These rules will be applied to the amateur sector from February 8.

We already heard the observers of French rugby complaining about a change of rules, wanted by World Rugby, in the middle of the season. The latter can now protest that the same modification is applied to amateur rugby competitions.
Supposed to streamline the game, these rules of rules are practiced around three sectors. “It appeared important for questions of clarity, understanding and readability, that these rules be extended to all official and regional official competitions”announces the Federation on its website.
If the amateur world still escapes the application of the 20 -minute red card, which will be integrated during the next VI Nations tournament which begins on Friday January 31, it will have to adapt to some modifications.

Transformations and penalties

From now on, the scorer will only have 60 seconds to transform the test, from the moment the ball was flattened. It will have the same time to convert a penalty from the moment the referee whistled.

Protection of melee half

The number 9, often annoyed by his counterpart during the melee outings, will now be a little quieter since his opponent will no longer be able to follow him and will have to be content to stay behind the midfield of the tunnel. Same rule on rucks and mauls, where he will no longer be tolerated to catch a player who tries to get the ball out, under penalty of penalty.

Alignment in touch

Also, to accelerate the game, the teams will now have to form an alignment in touch, within 30 seconds following the outlet of the ball. The evolution of the rule that will be talked about is that of “launching not straight”. If not launched, a fray is generally granted to the defending team. From now on, if the hooker's throw is not entitled, but no one jumped in defense, the game will continue. What no longer has to ask questions about the defense in touch: above or bottom?
