As for Stade Toulousain, the success against the Sharks in the Champions Cup last Saturday was not the most appreciated since the start of the competition. The reason being that the Rouge et Noir were messy during this meeting, winning 20 to 8 and missing the offensive bonus and therefore the five points. A success which could hurt the Toulouse residents in the race for first place. And while Ugo Mola's men played the game by fielding the best possible team, it turns out that on the South African side, the best players did not seem to be there. And that did not please Maxime Médard at all, a true legend of the club and now retired. The former French international from Stade Toulousain spoke on the Stephen Brunch show on RMC and he criticized the presence of South African teams in the Champions Cup.
Médard destroys South African teams in Champions Cup
“They say they put the best team in but apparently during the week they were talking about their number 15, saying he hadn't played in the first team. I find it a lack of respect for this competition, for Stade Toulousain, for the teams who travel there. Either you play the competition hard and put the best team in, or you don't play it.“, first said Médard, before attacking the presence of South African teams in the Champions Cup, because this distorts the Top 14, with teams obliged to field young people in certain matches and movements that wear out the players.
“It distorts the championship, it distorts everything. You need at least two or three teams in the clubs because, at rates like that, my players are not going to last ten years. It's tough, it's complicated. Only Toulouse and Bordeaux manage to rotate and rest their players. But last year the final, Bordeaux, they were done”estimated the former Toulouse player, unhappy with the presence of South African teams and who wants change.
