Retired for more than 10 years in homage to a club legend, the legendary number 6 of Hull KR will be worn next year by Mikey Lewis.
It may seem trivial seen like that. But Hull KR has just made a highly symbolic gesture in favor of its star. Indeed, the Robins have announced that the club's number 6, retired since 2016, will come out of the closet next year. The number 6 was originally retired as a tribute to club legend Roger Millward. Aligned 406 times by the Robins during the 60s, 70s and 80s, the English fly-half was then coach of the club. A servant of Hull KR for over 25 years, Roger Millward saw his number 6 retired upon his death in 2016.
The one who will be responsible for carrying it is called Mikey Lewis. Man Of Steel from last season, Lewis will have the heavy responsibility of making the legendary number 6 of Hull KR his own. And to meet this challenge, he will be able to count on the support of Roger Millward's family. In a statement, his widow Carol confirmed that she had given her blessing to the club and the player to use her late husband's number. And she's counting on Mikey Lewis to honor her:
It's a lot of emotions. Watching Mikey play reminds me a lot of Roger and his style of play. I think he really deserves it, and I'm happy that he's taking over. I'm sure Roger would be proud to see him wearing this number.
