Champions Cup – Notes from La Rochelle – Bristol: Skelton and Alldritt at the forefront

If the Rochelais won with an offensive bonus this Saturday against Bristol, on behalf of the second day of the Champions Cup, they owe it in part to the very solid performances of Will Skelton and Grégory Alldritt. Two leaders of this maritime team, extremely valuable for their ability to find progress in the opposing defense.

The tops

Whatever happens, can always count on its Australian spearhead. And, when the big events are there, so is the second row. As usual, Will Skelton was called upon a lot as a first striker. And, as usual, he constantly found progress. Allowing the English defense to be concentrated and tightened, particularly as they approached the goal, he was once again extremely central. He notably beat six defenders and was decisive on several of his team's attempts.

Already very visible during the victory at Bath last weekendthe La Rochelle captain has once again demonstrated that he is regaining his best level. This Saturday evening, Grégory Alldritt was very present on what he knows how to do best, namely balls and winning valuables in the opposing defense. On this level, maritime number 8 appeared particularly fresh and available. He thus covered 87 meters with the ball in his hands and beat five opponents. A solid match.

The flops

Bristol's third center line was particularly disappointing in Marcel-Deflandre. He, who we know to be so punchy and so skilful with the ball in his hands, was very little in sight and even made several blunders. Compared to his CV and his intrinsic qualities, the Fijian did not bring what was expected of him. Also author of two missed tackles out of five attempted, he was replaced before the hour mark.

Certainly, we can remember that he was the author of a decisive pass to the foot on Bristol's only try. But, on this occasion, it must be recognized that it was more the talent of Jack Bates, author of an individual exploit after winning his aerial duel against Dyllin Leyds, who spoke than Elizalde's visa, as his shot foot was extremely risky. For the rest, he missed a huge testing opportunity a few minutes earlier by slowing down his run. And also missed two tackles (for none successful). Released in the 61st minute.
