On the eve of facing Racing 92 in the 11e day of Top 14, the Stade Toulousain forwards coach Virgile Lacombe sent a wink and a laudatory message to one of his young players. The former hooker even admitted surprised by his recent performances with Toulouse despite a spotty start to the season.
Virgile Lacombe seduced by the performances of Clément Vergé
Substitute during the 1era championship day, then during the 3e. And then nothing more until 9e day and a starting place in Bayonne before starting again against Perpignan. In the middle, a gulf of a little over a month during which Clément Vergé no longer set foot on the pitch with the professional team.
Something to question, inevitably. Doubt, sometimes. Or simply work. As for doubt, we didn't see much of it in the two very solid copies produced in quick succession by the 2e ligne.
“For now, we know that by playing one match after another, he will continue to progress. Clément, it is surprising becausewithout having played for several weeks, he is capable of playing 80-minute matches in which he had a lot of activity. He manages to express himself and in particular to be among the first supports on crossings, to be able to make the extra pass in contact. Things that really stick to our rugby,” praised Virgile Lacombe at a press conference 24 hours before challenging Racing 92.
It's nice to have a player who doesn't take time to adapt to be at the level of our team and who is able to play an important match at home. Afterwards, Clément is a hard worker, he is rarely injured and it shows on weekends. It’s good for him and it’s good especially for the team.
Areas of progress identified
It must be admitted that with his round double meter and his 123 kilos, the Ariégeois demonstrates a more than interesting ease of movement in the movement game advocated by the Rouge et Noir.
But the Toulouse staff does not forget the priorities of the position of 2e line. Sometimes ungrateful, certainly, but oh so essential.
“We still have work to do with Clément. There are areas of progression in the combat phases, on which he places particular emphasis and on which he works regularly. Both in training and during match periods, he always has work to do,” breathes Lacombe.
And if Clément Vergé continues to work as his coach describes, he who is about to extend his contract until 2027 in Toulouse could well find a good place in the sun.
