In , more and more voices are speaking out against the 20-minute red card that World would like to permanently install in international matches. It will also be tested during the November tour, under a slightly different formula since the referees will have the choice between a permanent red card and a temporary red card depending on the seriousness of the fault.

Return to “dangerous terrain”

Ugo Mola spoke out against this new rule, the FFR, the LNR and Provale also and this weekend, it was Ronan O’Gara who spoke on this, in the “Off The Ball” podcast. And he also doesn’t understand at all the desire to change this red card rule. This is a very big danger for him.

This 20-minute red card is nonsense. I don’t see how this fits into the game.

We are always trying to improve this sport. A red card punishes an act of serious foul play. And if it’s serious, well the 20-minute sanction has absolutely no place (…) A 20-minute red card takes us back, particularly with regard to player safety, to dangerous territory.

Ronan O’Gara seems to be carrying the voice of Ireland here, which doesn’t seem to be a big fan either, like France, of this new look red card.

To summarize

In France, more and more voices are speaking out against the 20-minute red card that World Rugby would like to permanently install in international matches. French rugby authorities have criticized this rule, as have certain coaches and players, including Ronan O’Gara.
