Already suspended in Brazil, the noose is also tightening in Europe on X

Elon Musk will have to deal with a new front against his social network. Accused of spreading false information, X was suspended in Brazil and the noose is also tightening in Europe where the first sanctions could fall this fall.

The riots in the United Kingdom, sparked in early August by false rumors, have indeed reminded us of the danger of unregulated expression on the Internet. The suspect in the murder of three young girls had been wrongly presented as a Muslim asylum seeker. The fake news, relayed and amplified on social networks, including X, had triggered Islamophobic violence.

Musk’s insulting meme

In this context, the European Commissioner for Digital Affairs, Thierry Breton, sent a warning to Elon Musk in mid-August. The tempestuous business leader responded by publishing an insulting meme on his X account. A surprising move given that the social network is the subject of an investigation by Brussels that began in December and could result in fines of up to 6% of its global turnover.
