Left for dead by her ex-partner in 2019, archer Tracy Otto competed in her first Paralympic Games in Paris. The athlete, who spoke to the BBC and AFP, wants to be “a role model for women who have experienced things like [elle] ».

“I try to think of it as recreating beauty from ashes,” Tracy Otto told AFP in an interview on Sunday, 1is September. For the archer, the Paralympic Games have a taste of revenge. In 2019, the American, then aged 23, was the victim of an attempted femicide by an ex-partner. Five years later, Tracy Otto is competing in the Paris 2024 Games.

The athlete opened up at length in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, August 28, with the aim of being “a light, a beacon of hope” for victims of domestic violence. “It was October 24, 2019, we went to bed with my partner […]. Suddenly I heard a loud noise and saw a flashlight on my face. I heard his voice and I knew it was my ex,” she begins.

Tracy Otto explains that she had broken up with him a month earlier. “I had changed all the locks on my house,” she says, while her ex-boyfriend had been arrested for assaulting her in August. In the vast majority of cases of femicide, the breakup is in fact the trigger for the act.

Being a “model of positivity”
